Connect Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools

Prove you own your site, submit your sitemap, and see the searches that find you, in about fifteen minutes.

Add your site to Google Search Console

Open search.google.com/search-console and choose Add property. On a platform address, choose URL prefix and enter your exact live address, including the path, for example https://portfolio.wrxstack.com/yourname. On a custom domain, use URL prefix with https://yourname.com, or choose Domain to verify the whole domain with a DNS TXT record at your domain provider instead of the steps below.

  • Copy your live address from the admin rather than typing it.
  • Include https:// and, on a platform address, your /yourname path.
  • Make sure Allow search indexing is on and your site is published first.

Verify with the HTML tag

Under Other verification methods, choose HTML tag. Google shows a tag like <meta name="google-site-verification" content="abc123" />. Copy the content value, or the whole tag, since the code is extracted for you. In the admin open Settings, SEO, paste it into Google verification, and choose Save settings. Return to Search Console and choose Verify.

  • If Verify fails, wait a minute for the site to refresh and try again.
  • Check that the property address matches your live address exactly.
  • Keep the code in Settings for as long as you use the property. Google rechecks it.

step 3

Submit your sitemap and add Bing

In Search Console open Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml, and choose Submit. On a platform address the full sitemap address is https://portfolio.wrxstack.com/yourname/sitemap.xml. Then open bing.com/webmasters and choose Import from Google Search Console, which brings the site and its sitemap across with no further verification. To add Bing by hand instead, choose the HTML Meta Tag method, copy the content value of the msvalidate.01 tag into Bing verification in Settings, SEO, save, and verify.

  • Use URL inspection on your home page and choose Request indexing for a first crawl.
  • Leave the IndexNow key as it is. It already sends your changes to Bing within minutes.
  • After moving to a custom domain, add it as a new property and submit its sitemap.
