Medical assistant resume builder

The medical assistant resume builder that puts your certification first.

A medical assistant resume leads with your certification, then proves you can run both halves of the clinic: the clinical work, meaning vitals, phlebotomy, injections, rooming and prepping patients, and the front office, meaning scheduling, insurance verification, and charting in the EHR. Folio builds that resume for free. Certifications get their own section you can move above work history, the layouts are structured so an applicant tracking system can parse them, and the finished PDF and DOCX cost nothing to download.

Build your medical assistant resume and take the file with you.

Free covers the whole builder: every resume layout, the ATS score, and the download, with no card. Free does not cover a custom domain, your public page keeps a Made with Folio badge, and AI drafting stops at 10 generations a month.

How to make one

How to make a medical assistant resume, step by step.

Four passes. Credentials, clinic, filter, file.

  1. 01

Put the certification where it is read first.

Type your credential the way the certifying body writes it, CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA), or NCMA (NCCT), with the awarding body and the date. Then drag the certifications section above work history so a hiring manager sees it in the first inch of the page.

  2. 02

Split your skills into clinical and administrative.

Two short lists beat one long one. Clinical: vitals, phlebotomy, venipuncture, injections, EKG, specimen collection, sterilization, rooming. Administrative: scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorization, medical records, and the EHR you actually charted in, whether that was Epic, Athenahealth, or eClinicalWorks.

  3. 03

Rewrite duties as volume and outcome.

A recruiter cannot tell two medical assistants apart from a duty list. Attach a number to the work instead: patients roomed per day, draws per shift, providers supported, no-show rate after you took over reminder calls. Folio prompts for the number on every bullet.

  4. 04

Score it, fix it, then download it.

Run the ATS score before you send anything. Fix what it flags, watch the number move, and export the PDF or DOCX. The download is not behind a paid plan, so the file you fixed is the file you send.

What goes on it

What to put on a medical assistant resume.

A clinic manager scans for six things, in this order. Folio gives each one a real place instead of a free-text box.

Certification

CMA, RMA, CCMA, or NCMA, spelled out and dated.

Certifications live in their own section with the issuing body and the date, and that section can be reordered above experience. Write both the acronym and the full name once, because a human searches for one and a keyword filter often looks for the other.

Summary

A summary that names the credential and the setting.

Three lines: your credential, the setting you work in (family practice, pediatrics, urgent care, dermatology), and the one thing you are measurably good at. Skip the adjectives. A summary that says detail-oriented tells a clinic manager nothing they can check.

Clinical

The back-office work, listed as procedures.

Vitals, phlebotomy and venipuncture, injections and immunizations, EKG, wound care, specimen collection and labeling, autoclave and sterilization, rooming and patient prep. These are the words a posting is written with, so they are the words the resume should contain.

Front office

The administrative half, which is half the job.

Scheduling, check-in and check-out, insurance verification and prior authorization, referrals, medical records requests, and billing codes if you have touched them. Practices hire medical assistants who cover the desk when the desk is short.

EHR

Name the chart system, not just charting.

Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, eClinicalWorks, NextGen, Practice Fusion. The system is a searchable keyword and often a screening question, so it belongs in your skills list by name, next to HIPAA, CPR, and BLS.

ATS

A score out of 100 before you send it.

Folio grades the resume it builds across 7 weighted criteria: structure is worth 30, headings 18, selectable text 16, contact details 12, length 10, contrast 8, and risky elements 6. At 90 and above the resume earns the ATS-friendly badge. You see the number while you edit, not after a rejection.

No experience yet

How to write a medical assistant resume with no experience.

You are not writing a resume with no experience. You are writing a resume whose experience came from a classroom and an externship, and the fix is to stop apologizing for that and start counting it. Give your externship or practicum the same shape as a job: the site, the specialty, the hours you completed, the procedures you performed, and how many patients you handled in a day. A clinic manager reading 160 externship hours in a family practice, rooming 20 patients a shift, is reading experience.

Then lead with the credential. If you are certified, or sat the exam and are waiting on the result, that belongs at the top of the page, because certification is the line most postings screen on. Add BLS and CPR. Add the coursework that maps to real procedures, phlebotomy, EKG, pharmacology, medical terminology, and coding, so the skills section is not empty while the experience section is thin.

The rest is transfer. Retail and food service taught you to run a counter at speed under people who are unhappy, and that is triage at the front desk. Caregiving, pharmacy tech work, or a home-health shift is patient contact. Name the transferable work as its own short section, quantify it, and stop there. A one-page resume that is honest and specific beats a two-page resume padded with adjectives, and every layout in Folio is free, so nothing about being new costs you the download.

FAQ

Honest answers.

How do I make a medical assistant resume with no experience?

Treat the externship as the job. Write the site, the specialty, the hours you completed, the procedures you performed, and the patient volume you handled, then put your certification and BLS above it. Add coursework that maps to a procedure, phlebotomy and EKG and pharmacology, plus any retail, caregiving, or pharmacy work as a short transferable section. One honest page, quantified, is enough.

How do I put my medical assistant certification on a resume?

Give it a certifications section of its own and drag that section above work history in Folio, so it lands in the first inch of the page. Write it as the certifying body writes it, for example CMA (AAMA) or RMA (AMT), with the awarding organization and the date you earned it. Spell the full name out once too, since a screening filter may search the words rather than the acronym.

What skills should a medical assistant put on a resume?

Two lists, not one. Clinical: vitals, phlebotomy, venipuncture, injections, EKG, specimen collection, sterilization, wound care, rooming patients. Administrative: scheduling, insurance verification, prior authorization, referrals, medical records, and the EHR you charted in by name, such as Epic or Athenahealth. Add HIPAA, CPR, and BLS. Match the vocabulary of the posting you are answering.

What should a medical assistant resume summary say?

Three lines that a clinic manager can verify: the credential you hold, the setting you have worked in, and one thing you are measurably good at. For instance, a certified medical assistant in a busy pediatrics practice who rooms 25 patients a shift and runs insurance verification. Cut every adjective. Detail-oriented and hard-working describe nobody and disqualify no one.

How do I describe medical assistant duties on a resume?

Turn the duty into a measurement. Rather than assisted physicians with patient care, write the volume and the result: roomed and triaged 22 patients a day across 3 providers, drew 15 specimens a shift with a redraw rate near zero, or cut no-shows by taking over reminder calls. Folio asks for the number on each bullet, because volume is the only thing that separates two candidates with the same credential.

Is Folio genuinely free for a medical assistant resume?

Yes, and here is the boundary. The builder, every layout, the ATS score, and the PDF and DOCX download are all on the Free plan with no card and no watermark on the resume. What Free leaves out: you get no custom domain, your public page carries a Made with Folio badge, and AI drafting is capped at 10 generations each month. Pro lifts those, at Rs 599 or $9 a month.

Can Folio score a resume I already have as a PDF?

No, and we would rather say so than sell you something we do not run. The score reads the resume you build inside Folio, using its layout, theme, and structured content, so it cannot grade a file made in Word or Canva and uploaded. The upside is that you never have to fix a parsing problem after the fact, because the layouts are built so an applicant tracking system can read them.
